can anyone recommend a good tripod around $50?
i was looking at this one, but i have no idea if its any good:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001D60LG8/ref=s9_simz_gw_s4_p23_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=060TEGBSME909FZJSC5K&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
All cheap tripods are the same and do the same.
I have one and its lame.
I want a ball head mount but its too expensive.

just make sure its stable and has enough height to it.

I have this one at work... it does the job.

Only thing is that the head occasionally squeaks. We use it for video, so it can be annoying, but for still photos, that doesn't matter.

I have a cheap manfrotto that does the job. If it can hold up the "brick" (24-70) and the 70-200, this is the one you want.
Manfrotto and cheap don't get along.
How much did you pay? I would like a new tripod soon.

See the weight capacity. There is no way in hell that tripod would be able to sustain my 40d + 24-70.

When amazon had it, I'm going to say around $100 IIRC.

Well it's not worth buying a cheap tripod if your going to rock a heavy body with a 70-200 or something similar on it, you'll get vibrations for longers shutters and end up needing to upgrade anyways.
But I guess that's also the notion that some tripod is better then none.

Exactly. Do it right the first time. Get a decent tripod for around $100 or a shitty one for $50 and need to upgrade later. Makes no sense.

Looking at getting a new tripod soon. Anyone have a good tripod they recommend with leg adjustability for ultra low positions?

I have a targus tripod I bought from target for $15 bucks. Again like some of the people in here said... as long as it's stable and height is ok, that's fine with me (imo)

manfrotto has student discounts ^_^ two thumbs up from me on that one. I'm going to calumet today to pick up some vivitar285s so I'll look around for tripods. I just hope calumet does price matching :D

Ok, so I'm on a hunt for a tripod as well, and here is what I found. All depends on how portable and how much $$ your wallet can handle. Aluminum tripods are much cheaper but they can be heavy and not portable (aka just clip it to your backpack). Also they dont support that much weight as well, so if you ever plan on going heavier that 70-200, you re gonna be spending $$ again as well. Carbon Fiber tripods are sweet but they are expansive. They are light, portable and can support pretty heavy stuff.
as for heads, well I'm assuming you want a ball head. here it just depends if you want to use your L-plate and how much weight support do you need. Generally saying though, ball heads aren't all that expansive.
I myself decided on going with Gitzo GT0531 Carbon fiber tripod and Kirk BH3 ballhead. This setup should last pretty much forever and is super portable. its a bit pricey but again, you don't want to go super cheap on photography items as you'll just spent more $$ in the future anyways.
