Ehh i don't really think all that ram is necessary.
Cause i don't run enough programs at once to be using 6gbs of ram.. 2 is more then enough for me. Considering i was running 512 for like 3 years.

pretty fast processor, but only 2gb ram and 80gb hdd? my laptop has a 250gb internal and I still have a TB external for backup and storage.

1TB hard drives are cheap, i'd do that and upgrade to 4gb ram and that setup will be nice.

Well the 80 is there because i took it out of my old computer, so i can save money :P

If your not going to run big programs 2gb ram is fine and 500 gb h/d will suffice for music and pics.. I might scoop up a HDMI video card my spare pc. so can link it to my tv in the living room.

Totally kidding, lmao, that's my next comp though. Just waitin' till I get a job.

In all seriousness,
2.0GHz Pentium 4
1.25GB DDR Yeah, OG DDR, not DDR2 or 3.
40GB HDD
No graphics card
No audio card
CRT screen

Beast set up. You couldn't beat it if you tried.

Invidia Geforce 9400m (I think)

someday I'd like to upgrade to 8gb ram and an SSD.

I just ordered a bunch of parts to build a new LGA 1366 system. Ready for i9 like WHOA.

More RAM is helpful but the cas latency and timing combined with decent speed is more important.

where are you guys getting your ram at? 2gb is kinda weak and what I currently have.

How's it weak? What processor you running?
Cause i'm able to run a lot of programs with no lag whatsoever.

I'm running XP pro too.
I refuse to run vista, and 7 is still too new, and it takes up 11gbs of your hdd :O

^ that's probably why, and windows 7 uses a lot of ram.

G, go on newegg. They have ram dirt cheap. I have 8Gb and I got a really good deal on it. I'd go for the most your computer can take.

I don't really think you need that much ram.. The most i'd buy is 4gb ddr3. Cause you most likely don't have that much running at once.
i was able to run Unreal tournament3, team fortress 2, itunes, firefox, msn at the same time, getting 40-60fps in both games.. So i'm fine with that.

Synth upgrade to 4gb with windows 7 it is a nice boost.

newegg.com

Been building my pc's from there for about 10 years now.

200 series video card seems rather weak compared to the rest of your system.
1.5 tb drives are like 120 bucks. Although I usually use a quieter/faster 250 gb for games/operating system. And then have music, photos, videos on a seperate drive.

Running a now 3 year old system.
Intel E2180 1.8ghz stock 3ghz overclocked
2 gb of g.skill (soon to be 4)
Abit P5Q motherboard
BFG GTX 285 (recent upgrade)
Samsung 160gb
WD 250gb (both need to be replaced)
Was on XP now on Windows 7

Want a quad core but hard to justify. Server needs an upgrade more than the gaming machine.

Buy me this

and 2x of these

And definately wouldn't be the first.

Can someone explain to me why getting a quad core is so important? It most likely won't make a noticeable difference compared to mine, one of my friends is running a quad core with 8gb ddr3, dual graphics cards[not sure which ones] but it cost him like 2000, it's not much faster then mine. And for the extra 1500 that he payed it's definitely not worth it. You might seem cooler if you have a quad core, but it really doesn't make that much of a difference for the money.

For video editing and conversion it rocks face. Which is where my desktop is lacking as it stands. Also photoshop sees a definate improvement.

If you take a 3ghz dual core and line it up against a 2.5ghz quad the dual will usually win with games. But when you overclock that 2.5ghz quad to 3.0 ghz look out below, it beats it rather nicely with games that are cpu dependent.

Games also are starting to support quad core especially with putting physics on one of the extra cores, or sometimes on an extra core of the graphics card depending on setup.

Also some games are just more cpu intensive like real time strategies with advanced AI and lots of units, or Oblivion.

Gurantee you he is faster and it probably looks better with 4xAA on and bloom and all of the good looking stuff. But it definately wouldn't show in games like Tf2 which have rather low requirements to begin with.

Also 2x graphics cards is only useful at super high resolutions otherwise just a waste of heat/money/electricity. If you aren't running 1920x1200 etc, no point.

dont' forget architecture. AutoCAD needs A LOT of computer power.

More ram is always good. Especially with the resource hog you have for an operating system. Shame on Apple making it so the first Intel based iMacs can only do 2GB or else Id have more.
